Cracking chalet in a great location. Well equipped and very comfortable. Nice and clean with everything we needed to make the stay pleasurable. No snow at Jarjaratte, but good skiing on Super Devoluy which was less than an hours drive away with some breathtaking scenery. The chalet was always nice to come back to, especially with the fire and the logs which are provided. Some lovely walks around, and a wonderful restaurant in the village where we went twice because it was so good and Marie looked after both of our familes so well. Many thanks to Duncan and Sarah and Louise for making our stay so enjoyable...we have already booked again for next year!

Stuart Irwin & Family – Kent (January 2017)

The property is a modern chalet which is well appointed with comfortable bedrooms, wood burner (with dry logs provided) and everything you need including a games room, wifi and even 2 barbecues. Location is stunning with easy access for walks or skiing. Less than 2 hours from Lyon airport. We had a lovely holiday, going for long walks, road trips in the mountains and visits to nearby towns. Excellent local restaurants. Excellent service with all our queries answered immediately.

Richard Field – Warwickshire (October 2016)

Thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks in a gorgeous setting. The chalet is well appointed, equipped, comfortable and with plenty of room for our family of four plus pooch to escape each other if needed. The balcony/conservatory is ideal for meals and playing games as the sun sets. The views are stunning and the chalet is within easy access of the myriad of walks, climbs, tree wire walking, down hill biking and other activities which are on offer. The village pool was clean spacious and pretty much empty even on the weekends. There can't be many pools which allow you to scull about lazily whilst looking up at the mountain backdrop. The village is a short walk and quiet with a fun market twice a week and some nice bars and restaurants. A quiet location which is still within easy reach of transport networks to visit other parts of the region. Would definitely return.

Philip Burbidge and Family – Bristol (August 2016)

We have just returned from a wonderful family holiday in the chalet. The area surrounding Lus la Croix Haute is truly breathtaking. The chalet itself has everything you need for a relaxing holiday and was very clean when we arrived. The beds are very comfortable and though on several days the temperature reached 30 degrees we were never too hot in the evenings as the chalet (as long as the shutter are shut in the day when we were out) keeps nice and cool, though fans are available if needed. We especially enjoyed walking up to Les Pervanches restaurant in the evening and sampling local produce cooked to perfection, and with a four course meal for 18 euros we could not have asked for more. We visited Gap and Die and especially loved the lake at Veynes and the natural plunge pool just a ten minute walk away. There is more than enough to keep you occupied in the area but if you are just feeling lazy then the chalet has 2 acres of grounds, a table tennis table and sunbeds. The chalet was everything we were hoping for and Duncan could not have been more helpful, always replying to queries however trivial within just a few hours in many cases. We will certainly be recommending the chalet to family and friends.

Jo Carney and Family – Lincolnshire (August 2016)

From the moment we first enquired about this property, Duncan was v helpful, welcoming of questions and quick to respond. The house itself was v comfortable and clean and it was lovely to walk the 10 minutes to the village to go to the bakery or eat in one of the local restaurants. Would definitely recommend staying here if you simply want time and space to relax and get away from it all.

Fiona E and Family = Oxfordshire (August 2016)

We stayed for a month in this wonderful place - the description and photos are accurate and the owners answered our queries promptly and fully. The facilities were the best we've encountered in 30 years of holidaying in France. The local village has good bars, places to eat and shop and we found people very friendly. There is help on hand if required from the owners' manager, who is English and speaks French. There are beautiful walks all around, way-marked and of varying lengths and levels of difficulty - details and maps available from the tourist office in the village. The birdlife, flowers and other wildlife are superb. There is plenty to see and do, and bigger towns are within easy reach. The owners provided information about family activities as well as shopping, eating out, etc. The conservatory is one of the best things about this property, enabling you to be "outside but inside" if the weather turns on you! The kitchen is particularly well equipped. And the beds are comfortable! We would recommend this unreservedly and we hope to stay there again.

Julia and Geoff Bevan – Warwickshire (July 2016)

Enjoyed our stay in the Chalet. We loved the conservatory with a view of the mountains while eating our meal. We found the Chalet well equipped, clean and comfortable with everything needed for a trouble free holiday. The owners very helpful and approachable and Louise who lives nearby available for any advice if needed. We would not hesitate to recommend the Chalet to friends or relatives and hope to return ourselves in the future.

June and Geoff Stedman – Camarthen (June 2016)

We recently stayed a week with our two dogs, wonderful dog walks through the woods with the wild flowers and river, snow still on the mountain sides. Very accurate description and one of the cleanest properties we have stayed at. Lovely local drives nearby and also within a few hours drive. Would recommend the property to all our friends and relatives, young and old. All you require can be bought in the local village shops. Hoping to return another year.

Lynn and Roger Organ – Wiltshire (April 2016)

After visiting various regions of France over the years, we decided it was time to visit the Alps. We were looking for a relaxing stress free holiday with plenty of walks to take our dog on.

We couldn't of found a better place, the Chalet is situated close enough to a small village for those essential items but also far enough away to make you feel that you have it all to yourself.

As for the Chalet, it was very well equipped, very comfortable & extremely clean. I would fully recommend it to anyone looking for a get away holiday.

“Unknown unspoilt paradise”

“Fortunately this beautiful well appointed chalet is located in the mountain region of the Drome. I say 'fortunately' because if this chalet was located in Provence or in the Isere it would be impossible to rent due to demand as this charming chalet is set in the most beautiful mountain region of France & because it is in the Drome, nobody knows about it !!!!! But now I have let the cat out of the bag I imagine & hope more & more people will visit this undiscovered region & stay in this peaceful relaxing chalet ..open the windows & listen to the silence !!
The chalet itself offers everything a couple a family or two families would need to enjoy the region at any time of the year : there are sun loungers, a brand new table tennis table for the large garden in summer & as the chalet is on different levels, everyone can find some private space. It is beautifully clean, well appointed & even the most blasé visitor can chill out on the veranda looking out at the ever changing light on the mountains opposite & plan
beautiful walks or cycle trips which can be tailored to suit all levels from kids to dri-fit- lycra-polar dressed pros !! What more can I add ? The owners could not be more helpful ..in fact I would just add this : take your slippers with you to wear indoors..in order to treat this holiday home the way you would treat your own home ..the owners deserve it !!”

Alan and Sandrine - Peyrins, France (Christmas 2015)

“A great house, with plenty of living space, log fires and great views of the mountains. For walkers there is a lot of stuff to do, either from the house or with short drives into the surrounding area. Getting into those high places was great for scenery and spotting eagles. The village is a short walk away with a boulangerie, a shop and a couple of bars. Nearby restaurant served great mountain food. We don't often go back to a place, but this will be an exception”.

Simon and Karen – Caernarfon (September/October 2015)

“Enjoyed a lovely two weeks here. The chalet really is a home from home - well kitted out and very comfortable. The local village has a number of different restaurants and a few shops - all within 5 min drive or 15 min walk. We used the chalet as a base to explore the south of France, Switzerland and Annecy and it worked perfectly”.

Diane and Rob – North Lincolnshire (September 2015)

“Listing description accurate with good detail of location which made finding the chalet easy. Arrived to meet the local agent who was & remained very easy to access and very responsive. The home was clean and very well equipped, we felt at home immediately. The local area is just beautiful, as a mountain lover & never having visited in the summer I was captivated by the open spaces and easy access to great walking. The whole family enjoyed hiking, playing by the river, games at the house (in particular the archery!) and generally hanging out. We had fun with the down hill biking & plunge pools & felt comfortable allowing the children to walk to local fun spots alone. We enjoyed the local village ambiance, shops, markets, hotel bars and local restaurants. The real test of all holidays is the response when things go wrong (and on occasions things will go wrong). We had some power supply issues which were dealt with in an exemplary fashion, we couldn't have wished for a more cohesive approach. I would have no hesitation in recommending the property & would like to return for a longer stay. A great holiday in a stunning location”.

Graham and Annette – Hertfordshire (August 2015)

We as a family of 5 have just returned from the chalet and all I can say is that it was perfect! The house itself is just lovely, comes with everything you will need from tv and wifi to fully loaded kitchen and utility room. The garden has plenty of room for the kids to run around and a games room with plenty of bits in.
The surrounding area is visually stunning from the mountain views from all angles to the very traditional and beautiful town that is a 5-10min walk away, this with all the forest walks, natural streams with rock pools big enough to swim in and many activities within a 10min drive made this a perfect holiday location for us!
If i could persuade the wife into a winter holiday i would be returning soon to make use of the ski station that is only a few km's away but she will have none of it so instead it will be another summer holiday in years to come.

In short I cannot find fault in the house itself or the surrounding area, even if you need to do a big supermarket shop its only a 20min drive away through a stunning mountain range.

Gareth, Kelly and family – Hertfordshire (August 2015)

Clean, comfortable, well equipped lodge in a great location. Nice typically French village within a short walk with good facilities (restaurants, small shops, tennis, swimming). Loads to do in the area. Really easy to deal with the owners, no hassles at all.

Great holiday.

Chris and family – Moray (July 2015)

We had a great week – well looked after – the large conservatory is great in that most of the panels slide open….brilliant on hot days! – great walking – the weather was hot and sunny – wild flowers and butterflies abound – great place to enjoy life.

Ashley and Cheryl – Peterborough (June 2015)

Hi Duncan,

Thank you for your e-mail, I intended to drop you a line anyway to say what a fantastic time we had at your chalet.

We were completely bowled over by the whole area and the accommodation, everyone so friendly and very patient with my near non existent French.

You really are lucky to have found such a place as this, but I am sure you know that already.

The weather ranged from sunny highs of 34c to around 11c, so on a couple of occasions the fire was needed. We had a thunder storm on about 10 of the days we were there, some spectacular....but always after we had returned to base for the evening.... and one even took the power out.

Visited various recommended markets and enjoyed the walking at the head of the valley as well as doing absolutely nothing other than plunder and listen to your C.D collection........good variety....but Nick Haywood and Haircut 100...really..!!

All of the above we both thoroughly enjoyed.

Cannot think of any downside other than having to leave. The chalet was clean when we arrived so we cleaned before we left......pass on our thanks to Debbie for popping in to see we were o.k......the wine and beer on arrival was most welcome, and all in all it would be difficult to find a fault.

The only thing we could recommend is you having a visitors book to allow comments to be left, these have been useful in the past and are often a full of ideas and places that others have found.

We definitely would like to return again in the future.....so thank you again for a great break.

Kevin & Karen McMahon – Northumberland (June 2015)

It's 3 weeks since we returned from Lus and we are still wishing we were back there. The chalet is set in the bottom of an idyllically beautiful valley with views including La Jarjatte. Meadows filed with wild flowers and the village 10 mins walk away.

Authentic France through and through. The chalet is very well equipped and comfortable. We dined with family living and staying nearby in the conservatory/balcony - easily seated 9. Lots of games, ping pong and equip in the basement. Loads of space. Open plan living with wood burner. We want to come again and again. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this stunning accommodation and location. Thanks again Duncan.

Leigh Willoughby and family – Cheshire (May 2015)

Our first proper visit to France and cannot wait to visit again, sooner rather than later! The chalet sits on a large parcel of land about 15 minutes walk outside the charming village of Lus La Croix Haute. Plenty of space for children and/or dog (if allowed?) to run around. Likewise the nearby hills and mountains are ideal for hiking and cycling. The chalet is perfect if you like cooking and eating in - the open kitchen / living room layout is perfect for cooking while entertaining. Furthermore the outside deck/balcony wraps around and connects with the conservatory, and if you open the living room windows you further expand the open area (better yet, passing dishes and food through the window to the conservatory makes setting and cleaning the dining table in the conservatory a breeze!)

The conservatory was probably our favorite aspect of this lovely chalet, given our preference for cooking at home and then eating out there. When warm you can open the windows, when cooler you can shut them and even turn on the floor space heater if needed - being May, we experienced a range of temps from mid-20s to single digits so were really able to experience dining in the conservatory in various conditions! From Lus you are within an hours drive to a variety of different areas (and climates, depending on which month you're visiting). To the south is the nearby border of PACA where you can visit lovely towns like Gap and Sisteron - which were quite a bit warmer than Lus on the chilly days despite just being a short drive away - and from where you can drive onward to visit the lavender fields during the summer season.

To the west along some fantastic scenic drives are towns like Die which are perfect for sightseeing and having a lunch or dinner. And of course to the east are ski resorts and runs in winter, should you need some extra selection to the nearby runs in La Jarjatte. As mentioned, being May it was a low season (nice and quiet!) and the weather varied quite a bit (which is fine, because warm sunny days get boring after a while, right?)

One of things we enjoyed most about this rustic area was how it clearly maintains a lifestyle from a bygone area in comparison to the faster paced and over-convenience'd ones most of us have gotten accustomed or only ever known - be prepared to (re)experience days when the local village stores close for lunch, for instance. In all, this is truly a place to get away from it all.

Translation:
This past May was our first time to visit lovely Lus la Croix Haute.  We had no problem driving to the chalet, following the clear directions from Lyon airport provided in advance.
The chalet is a three story home with a large garden.  The interior decoration is simple and pleasant.  I was pleasantly surprised with the spacious and fully equipped kitchen, and we enjoyed cooking at the house with local foods and ingredients.  Then we often ate under a starry sky in the conservatory, which is fully surrounded by windows that can be opened on warm evenings and closed on cooler ones.  Such a wonderful experience.
I was also particularly impressed with the owner’s attention to detail in welcoming guests with a personally signed welcome note and complimentary bottle of wine!  A detailed binder is provided that includes all instructions for operating the TV, DVD player, music, etc. as well as connecting to the WIFI.

There’s also plenty of information on the local village and surrounding areas.  For our next visit we will consider visiting during winter (skiing) or summer for visiting the Provence lavender fields.  On this visit, our daily routine included walking to the village for coffee and croissants.  And of course, the baguettes are delicious and almost compulsory!
Note that life there is completely opposite from the city.  Everyone smiles at each other and acknowledges one another with a friendly “bonjour”.  Makes sure you do the same if visiting.
It’s hard to include everything about our visit in one review – I didn’t even mention the splendid mountain scenery here, but it speaks for itself!  Overall, a week spent here is a real break and therapy from the over stimulated and fast paced lifestyles to which most of us are accustomed, and I highly recommend you visit!

Charles and Gina – Ohio USA (May 2015)

We had a glorious week, the house is lovely and we were all really
comfortable. Those who skied got some great time on the slopes, we only
used La Jarjatte and it was perfect for everyone. Thanks too for the
wine and beer, it was much appreciated at 1.30 am when we arrived!
Thanks again for a wonderful week at La Clairette from us all, we had an excellent time.

Jane and Martin Lacey-Smith – Civray, France (February 2015)

We had a fantastic time at Maison La Clairette. It really is a great house in a magical location and the snow and skiing couldn’t have been any better. It was the perfect holiday. A huge thank you.

Angela and Ian Garrington – Oxford (January 2015)

We had a great holiday in your gite. We loved sitting in the conservatory and the sitting room in the evening. It was well equipped and comfortable. A home from home.
We would highly recommend your property to our friends.

Richard and Odile Martin – Buckinghamshire (August 2014)

Thank you for your email. We had a lovely time on holiday, and the house was superb. We really enjoyed going on the bikes down the hill at La Jarjatte and also the kids high ropes at abro magic. Jenny and I climbed a few local mountains as well and we took the boys up montagne de clairet too.
We are already planning a return visit, maybe next year or year after!!

Nick and Jenny Shelly – Lancashire (July 2014)

We had a wonderful time at the Chalet, very relaxing and we enjoyed the hot weather. The chalet is very well provided with kitchen and dining equipment and the table tennis and outdoor furniture were a big hit! The beds are really comfortable especially after a day up the mountains!

Louise was very helpful when we couldn't get the TV working at first and the WIFI went off.!! In the garden we saw squirrels, rabbits, giant hares, herons, woodpeckers,  eagles( high up), redstarts and of course the magpies .

It was a great break for us all, thank you , I hope you get out there soon to enjoy the summer alps.

Chris Hill and friends – Cumbria (June2014)

Nick Jane and Jenson the black lab had a great stay at Maison La Clairette 17/05/14 to 24/05/14 everything about the property was just right for a relaxed but very active weeks stay. Very comfortable and easy to live in we had a fantastic 7 day break. The walking from the doorstep was some of the best we have ever experienced we walked each day for 6 to 8 hours never retracing our steps and taking in all the main peaks including Montagne De Clairet. Each time we arrived back at the house it was like coming home every thing we needed was there and functional.
A very nice circler walk from the house to La Jarjatte is possible although the path through the wooded slope on the South side of the road has been washed out in places still passable with caution.
The family run restaurant across the road was lovely excellent food and super wine. The village had every thing we needed and thanks to good weather the car didn't move for the week.

Jenson had to have his treatment to come back to the UK the local vet Anne Maillard on Champ Bertrand at Les Glacieres helped with this giving Jenson a full examination with worm and tick treatment for a very reasonable €30.00  you can even walk to the vets from the house by following GR 94.
We will visit again to take in some more of this wonderful region.

Nick, Jane and Jenson – Cambridgeshire (May 2014)

During February 2014, my Family stayed at Maison La Clairette in Lus La Croix Haute – what a fabulous time we had!! My children, who are aged 7 and 10, have already said that they want to come back again next year!!

I’ll start with the accommodation which was just perfect – we couldn’t have wished for anything more. Even a ‘personal JCB, to clear the driveway from Snow!! For the kids, there was English and French satellite tv and network access for electronic devices. The accommodation is really spacious, warm, lovely and clean with all the kitchen appliances you could wish for including the ‘essential’ dishwasher and a really nice fire (the chopped logs are stored by the entrance to the house). There were even 3 hairdryers!

The location is great too!! The people in Lus La Croix Haute and La Jarjatte were just so friendly to us. Then there was the skiing – the main purpose for our trip. If you want somewhere to ski at super low prices and suitable for a young family, then this is the place to be. We also went to Super Devoluy (a much bigger resort) and this was really easy to drive to.

All in all – a fantastic holiday and we wish that we could have stayed for much longer.

We hope that you have as great a time as we did.

The Flowers Family (February 2014)

We loved our stay, the house was spotless and very well equipped with everything we could have ever needed. The surrounding views are outstanding.

The trip was made even better as we stumbled across the Monte Carlo Rally. Being a big Motorsport fan that was brilliant.

We would certainly be interested In staying again next year.

Thanks once again. I will be sure to recommend your property.

Daniel Roberts (January 2014)

'We spent most of 2013 living at Maison La Clairette and were lucky enough to experience the house in all seasons. The Lus la Croix Haute area is absolutely beautiful and completely unspoiled.  It feels a little like stepping back in time.

First the house.  Warm in winter and cool in summer it was a delightful place to live.  The house is deceptively large and can easily sleep 9 people and not feel crowded.  It's comfortable and clean and we spent many hours just sitting watching the fire while the snow fell outside.

The skiing in the area is superb. There is a small local resort at La Jarjette which is amazingly cheap and perfect for beginners or for getting your ski legs back after a long break. The larger resorts of Super Devouly and Joue De Loup are only 50 minutes drive away and offer some superb skiing at very reasonable prices and, other than in French school holidays, there are no crowds or queues. They have English speaking instructors.  We used the same one all year - ask for Yves, he's excellent and does both ski and snowboard lessons.

When summer arrives you can count on long warm days. The garden is large and runs into the woods and river beyond.  Our main summer activity was building dams in the river to create a swimming area. If you are feeling less energetic there is a natural swimming hole just up the road.

The village comes to life in summer with French holiday makers and all sorts of activities, especially cycling and climbing.  Try the woodfired pizzas at the camp ground and also the great food at Les Prevenches.
It's also worth following some of the walking trails to climb the nearby peaks.  The views from the top are spectacular.

It's been an unforgettable year and one in which we felt very much at home at Maison La Clairette.  If you go please say hi to the neighbours from us!

Matt and Kathy Crozier (January – December 2013)

"My family (2 adults and 5 children) recently spent two weeks in August in Maison La Clairette and loved it! The chalet is very comfortable and well appointed and the views while eating at the table on the balcony are to die for! The grounds are very spacious and the children loved riding their bikes around them as well as playing endless table tennis. The village is very sweet and has everything you really need including a great pool. The surrounding area is perfect for active families and we enjoyed all that was on offer, even with our youngest being only five. Anywhere where you can ride your bike for a couple of minutes and swim in a crystal clear river has to be good for you. An excellent place to holiday at."

Jacqui and Steve Scott – Lancashire (August 2012

“Dear Duncan and Sarah,

Just to say thank you so much for letting us share in your chalet. We had another wonderful two weeks at Lus, with perfect weather this time too! We took the bikes and were able to cycle everywhere and with the children being a little older could take advantage a little more of what is on offer, as well as a little gastronomic appreciation! The market provided us with over 100 peaches between us over the two weeks. I'm surprised we're not developing fuzzy skin!

Thanks so much, once again.”

Caroline and Simon Richards – Surrey (July/August 2012)

“Thank you for your e mail. Yes, we had a truly great holiday and 3 weeks
seemed to go by very quickly. The house was wonderful , in such a good
location and the views all around were stunning.

We were lucky with the weather and felt very smug watching the English
weather forecasts on your television. The village of Lus was pretty and
certainly had all the basic shops etc. We did quite a few excursions but
always enjoyed returning to the house and that area.

We would recommend trips out to the col de Grimone and on to Chatillon en Dios and Die, the col de Menee and Chichiliane and mont Aiguille, the towns of Gap and
Nyons and Orange, the lac de Serre Poncon and the roads aroud Mens.

Anyway we are sure you already know all these places but your customers
might like to know of them. The other thing to stress was how good the walking is
around Lus and la Jarjatte.

We can't think of anything else that might improve the house....Louise bought 2
trays at our suggestion and we bought you a new non stick frying pan and
nylon spatula. Please thank Louise for all her help and suggestions.

We dawdled on the way home and stayed in the champagne region.
A convenient hotel half way to your house from Calais is just off the A5 (junction 22)
near Troyes called le Val Moret at Magnant Tel 0033325298512. ( accueil@le-val-moret.com) it has a pool, a good restaurant and a new quiet annexe. Would also recommend stopping off to see the Canadian war memorial at Vimy ridge ...turn off junction 7 off the A26 near Arras.

Anyway thank you again for all your help, we cannot recommend your house
and the area too highly.

……two things we forgot to mention. The first is what a great house for people with families and the other was how good the two restaurants were....La Pervenche and La Bergerie at la Jarjatte. We will try and persuade our 2 children and their families to book it at some stage in the future. The only thing we didn't envy you was all the regular external wood maintenance necessary !”

Michael & Edwiner Dober – Cambridge (June/July 2012)

“How very miserable it is to be back in blighty after such a fantastic
2 weeks…We really did have a fantastic time and although we tried
very hard to think of something to tell you to make it better, we came
up with only one point which was when pulling out of the drive to turn
in either direction, it was very difficult to see to the left so perhaps, in
spite of how quiet the road generally was, a mirror on the opposite
side might make it a little safer to pull out. But really not a major
issue.

Giles and I have been looking at property in the Alps for a year or so
now, however our jobs (we're both serving in the Army) meant we were
overseas for 6 months so it really was the first chance we had had to
explore the south west corner. We're both so glad we looked as it's so
easy to get drawn into the Chamonix / Les Houches / tri border area as
so many Brits focus their property efforts there, but we were happily
led down a different train of thought after spending 2 weeks in Maison
La Clairette.

You really have found an absolute gem of a location,
we're both very keen walkers and managed 7 tops during the stay as
well as some kayaking (at Saillons - brilliant, although the river was
pretty wild so would recommend asking for helmets as both Giles and I
capsized in spectacular form) and plenty of dining at Les Pervanches
(again, fantastic recommendation, wonderful simple food so difficult
to find in more touristy areas).”

Helen & Giles – Wiltshire (June 2012)

“We had an absolutely fabulous time and the weather was amazing, sunbathing on the balcony in the afternoons!

We just loved your chalet.  It was a perfect set up for two couples, each having a double bedroom and two bathrooms.  The seating was perfect and we only ate out one evening, the kitchen was so well equipped we just used the village shops and prepared banquets each evening - the shopkeepers were very friendly and the Hotel restaurant made our evening out quite memorable!

One of the best bits for me personally was the stove expresso maker - I had been tempted to take my own with me!  As a group we loved the quite location.  Whilst La Jarjatte closed the day after we arrived, the drive to both Super Devoulay and Joue de Loup was so enjoyable and the resorts perfect for the beginners we had with us and just lovely for the lazy/cruising skier I am too.  I would recommend the cross country route to Die, the tunnels were amazing.

Have to say Louise was a fountain of information and very accessible - please pass on my thanks.

Thank you again and I would highly recommend your chalet”.

Marianne and Roy Edwards – Southampton (March 2012)

"We had an entirely enjoyable stay at La Clairette and in all honesty, we wanted for nothing. The property was surprisingly spacious, with a kitchen and utility room fully equipped with all the utensils, crockery, cutlery and electrical appliances that anyone could need. The living area was on two levels, with a large dining area above where the adults could continue after dinner drinks and conversation, whilst the children could relax on the ample and very comfortable sofa seating below and watch movies.

The AV setup was a godsend with the kids able to watch DVD and BBC channels through Freesat and French satellite on the large TV. The provided music system and ipod dock was pressed into use after the children went to bed. The central heating and log burner were very effective and ensured no problems in keeping us warm or providing hot water. Both showers were superbly powerful.

La Clairette was an easy 10 minutes walk from the nearest village, Lus La Croix Haute, which has two stores, a cave and a few decent bars and eateries and 10 minutes in the other direction to the ski station at La Jarjatte, The area around the property is criss-crossed with enough marked trails to satisfy most day trekking and mountain-biking  requirements.

In all our dealings with Duncan, before, during and after our stay, we have been bowled over by his willingness to help, his comprehensive and calm replies to even the daftest questions and his sense of humour. A really decent chap.

Thoroughly recommended."

Michael and Helen Mac Sweeney – Southsea (December 2011)

“We can't believe we are home almost 2 weeks. Sorry for delay in e-mail, but back to work and both of us have been busy. We had such a fabulous time in the area. House was great, had 2 wet days in 17, and on one of them the sun came out early evening. The views are spectacular. We walked, went to Gap ( found Decathlon and purchased!), went to Mens, drive amazing. We also went to Sisteron and walked around the Citadel (really worth a visit ) and would go back to have a wander around the town. We ate at your favourite restaurant on 3 occasions and loved it. We ate at the Commerce Hotel once, it was good and owners lovely but not the same atmosphere. Your instructions to the house were great. The butcher in the village is first class, we had meals at home with his excellent meat. We saw a young deer run across the garden one evening, and we were so lucky to see a golden eagle 3 times soaring above the river at the bottom of your garden, the first time it swooped down towards the river and we could see the head it was so close.

We were so lucky to have been in the village on our last weekend ( had gone to previous Sunday markets and stocked up on great fuit and veg ), it was a market based much around mushrooms, a guy doing carvings was amazing. Singing, lots of people we loved it. We love France, have gone back to places before, but we can honestly say this has been the best holiday in France for us.

Louise is a lovely person, you are lucky to have her ( Louise is so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of France ) “

Breeda and Andy Wilson – York (September 2011)

I would just like to thank you for facilitating our wonderful Christmas. It was just perfect- great snow, magnificent weather, perfect ski-ing for all of us, including my husband who had never skied before but who did the red on the last day, but particularly your fabulous house. We have never had such a  perfect holiday. Thank you so much for all your advice and help. It was all so totally spot on, including the turkey! Happy New Year!

Niall and Therese O’Reilly – Lyon (December 2011)

“Well, where shall I start?! ... It was out of this world.  We loved every minute of it.

The chalet was absolutely spotless when we arrived and had everything you could possibly need.  It was a great size for a family and very homely - it must be amazing in the winter too.

Your directions were spot on and the tip about shopping on the way was good advice.  We arrived in the dark (took rather too long shopping - we love a French supermarket!) and so woke up the next morning to the most breathtaking views.

Louise is lovely and extremely helpful.  She really went out of her way to help us source activities and suggest places to visit.  We particularly enjoyed the reservoir at Serres, the lake at Veynes, the mountain biking with Jerome and the boys loved playing in the River Buech.

Maison La Clairette was faultless.  I can honestly say, it was the best self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in.  It's a great area for families as there are many activities near by.  It may be worth highlighting that the French don't really have a 'shoulder' season so many activities do close after the last weekend in August.  But, even this didn't deter us as we went to the river and were more inclined to take a drive to Gap and Serres etc.

We hope to return to Maison La Clairette for a family holiday again soon and would certainly have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Thank you again, we all have many treasured family moments from Maison La Clairette which will recall with fondness for many years to come.”

Vanessa and Warwick Bullock – Worcestershire (August 2011)

“We had a great time in Lus and really enjoyed being at Maison La Clairette – the scenery in the area is quite stunning ! Thanks.”

Mike Briggs – Oxford

“We had a lovely week at the chalet and were so lucky with the weather with sunshine and temps around the 30’s everyday. We all agreed that you have a superb chalet in a fantastic setting with amazing 360° views.

It was really quiet as the French and English holidays had yet to begin. We did a few hikes from the chalet up to the nearby hills and one further out near to Mont Aiguille and hardly saw a soul the whole time – so unusual for the Alps in summertime. Did a bit of swimming too in the river near the bridge towards La Jarjatte – a very refreshing and cool experience.

Couldn’t praise it too highly. May call on you again for use of the chalet”

Jeremy Falle – Jersey

“Just a short note to say that we all had a great time in your beautiful home. From start to finish, we had a relaxing and stress-free time, even with a 2yr and 3month old in tow.! The chalet is gorgeous and the village is really sweet, as are the locals. The surrounding area is great for walks & activities. Louise was really friendly & helpful as well. Loved it.”

Gary & Janette O’Hagan – Northern Ireland

“A great location to use as a base to explore the surrounding villages and countryside. Maison La Clairette had everything we needed to make for a very enjoyable self-catering holiday”

Paul Pugh – Derbyshire

“We had a lovely holiday and the scenery and wild flowers were just stunning…It was lovely to see the wildlife in the area – birds that we don’t see here and deer, marmots and what looked like red squirrels…we found the house very comfortable and had everything that we needed”

Mr & Mrs E Ward – York

“Hi Duncan, I just wanted to thank you for the use of Maison La Clairette for our holiday in France. We had a lovely week in Lus La Croix Haute. The Scenery is spectacular and the village and it’s market delightful. The weather was kind to us only raining on the Saturday we arrived and on the Sunday we departed…..Maison La Clairette is an excellent chalet, very home from home and has everything you could possibly need. Great value for money too – we were all impressed at how roomy it was. By the way, the shower in the basement is really good – great water pressure!! We will certainly be recommending the chalet to our friends and family”

P.S. “We went to the local village restaurant that you recommended – the owner was a very smiley man who didn’t speak a word of English, but we managed to get by with our pigeon French. The food was very good and what good value too..!”

Amanda & Tim Stubbs – London

We had a wonderful weeks stay here at the end of June. The weather was fantastic. The house has everything you need and more. Very spacious inside and lots of outdoor space too for relaxing, playing games or enjoying a BBQ. The kitchen is fully equipped. The location gave us easy access to local attractions as well other attractions a short drive away such as Grenoble which has a lake you can swim in. Remuzat, a great place to watch vultures from the top of the mountain, which you can drive most of the way up if you don’t fancy the walk. Visited The Citadel in Sisteron, lovely panoramic views from the top, the town is lovely too. From the house it’s a short walk into the village where there’s a local supermarket to buy your essentials. A butchers we used most days that also sells bread, cakes and wine. There are also some nice restaurants if you’re looking to dine out. Didn’t use the nearby outdoor swimming pool but it looked very inviting. Also nearby is a plunge pool which we visited a few times, once after climbing one of the mountains opposite. Very cold but great to dip your feet in after a long hike. If you like walking, nature, exploring or simply just relaxing then this is the place to stay. Booking was made very easy. The owners provided lots of info on the local area and places to see and things to do. We will definitely be booking again. Highly Recommend!

Matt Powell - Buckinghamshire (June 2018)

We've just had the most amazing time here. The house is splendid and fully lives up to the description, roomy and well laid out with just about everything you could need for a comfortable stay. Very relaxing and a real home-from-home when you add in the freesat capability for the TV and broadband that satisfied our teenager. Our boys also loved the table tennis table in the basement and the garden plenty big enough to play frisbee in. We found that the nearby river was a great source of fun, with lovely plunge pools that you can almost swim in, and plenty of places to sunbathe. Further up the valley, our youngest loved the high-ropes course at Accrobuech. We also had a couple of day trips out to the lakes at la Germanette. The spectacular mountain road to Die is worth the drive as is the walk to the suspension footbridge at Mayres-Savel. Our hidden gem of the holiday (not to be found online) was the pottery of Michel Cohen, about halfway between Aspremont and Serres. Only a small roadside sign to point the way off the main road, but a treasure trove of wood-fired pottery from a friendly and English speaking artisan. The owners are very helpful and responded quickly to our questions when we were booking, making the whole process very easy. There's no question that we will book again if we return to this area.

James Cornah & Family - Cheshire (August 2018)

Fantastic holiday, which ticked all our boxes: Spacious, well maintained, good quality accommodation Beautiful mountain area with well marked footpaths Amazing mountain biking up to 5,000' from the doorstep (XC) Challenging road bike hill climbing area Convenient village shops Local outdoor swimming (both the heated village pool and the river) Local English speaking assistance available Well worth the drive. We only used the car for a supermarket shop and to swim in the lake at Veynes. (Don't miss the inflatable aqua obstacle course at Veynes - children and adults. Brilliant fun) We loved it - adults and teenage children

Diane Henderson & Family - Lancashire (August 2018)

A very comfortable, clean and well equipped chalet located in a picturesque setting. The description of the property given on both the Holiday France Direct site and that of the owner is accurate and honest. We travelled between the summer and winter seasons therefore some of the restaurants in the village were only open on odd occasions, no problems, the chalet has a very well equipped kitchen enabling us to practice our French Cuisine from the produce purchased in the local market. The village is quite isolated so be prepared to travel a bit if supermarket shopping is your thing. The booking process was easy and the owner Duncan responded very quickly and provided extensive details of the property and things to do in the local area. I particularly enjoyed mountain biking near the property. A local bike shop was able to complete running repairs on a buckled wheel, some of the terrain is quite rough but easier tracks and quite roads are available. We will go back to the area and would have no hesitation in recommending this property to family and friends.

Our Location

Our Location

Situated in the PACA region (Provence, Alpes, Cote d'azur) you have a choice of travel options. If you want to fly and drive, Lyon or Grenoble airports are the nearest. We favour Lyon as there are more flights and choice of car hire companies. From Lyon (St Expury) it really is a very easy drive to Lus la Croix Haute and will take under 2 hours. We drive most of the time as the dog comes with us. The route from Calais to Lus is also very easy, with motorways all the way except for the last 40 minutes as you climb into the southern alpes. We allow 8.5 - 9.0 hours including breaks.
